"I was robbed off the African best player award twice” – Asamoah Gyan

General captain of the Black Stars Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he deserved to win the African best player award in 2010 and in 2014.

The former Sunderland striker bemoaned losing the awards to former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o and former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure.
Asamoah Gyan in 2010 finished second behind Samuel Eto’o. The Ghanaian international didn’t even make the top 3 list in 2014.
Gyan in an interview questioned the criteria for the voting.
“Sometimes I don’t know how they vote it, but I still think I should have won it in 2010 and 2014 because I deserved it.”
“I did everything I was scoring goals, I was on top of my shape, I was doing everything you can check the stats.
“I don’t know how they rate it. Why am I saying I should have won it in 2010 and 2014, without saying 2011, 2012, 2013,” he asked?
“It’s because I knew what I did and everybody saw it… I think 2010 and 2014 should have been my year.’
Asamoah though in 2010 won the BBC African Footballer of the year. He also appeared in the CAF team of the year 3 times (2010, 2013, 2014).
“Sometimes I feel like there were a lot of players who were even better than me and they didn’t get to there,” he added.
“But at least I was able to win the BBC African Player of the Year, it was one of my (most) prestigious awards in my career. I was second in the CAF Awards.
“I placed second behind one of the greatest African players, Samuel Eto’o, Drogba was third.
“Being on (the stage) with these great legends, great giants, I still feel proud of myself and still feel great,” he concluded.
Asamoah Gyan is Ghanan’s all time leading top scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances.
